CAMPBELL SCALE MODELS
#800 PROFILE SHINGLES INSTRUCTION SHEET
Application of the Campbell Profile Shingles to HO buildings, both old and new, is extremely simple, and the finished roof will
have startling realism.
A. For improving already completed buildings, the gummed shingle strips may be applied directly over the previous roof if the gummed strips will stick to the surface. If you do this, draw guide lines 3/32" apart.
An easier method may be to remove the old roof, and using it as a template, cut the ruled roof cards furnished, to the size and shape needed.
B. For use on new buildings, or when the entire roof is to be replaced, trim the ruled roof cards to fit, making sure the edges are properly lined up with the guide lines. Cut out spaces for any dormer windows or roof angles. If the roof is larger than the cards furnished, they can be 'spliced' together with Scotch tape to make roofs as large as needed. A bit of card glued on the underside of the splice will give added strength.
C. Cut the roll of "shingles" into strips slightly longer than the roof. With a small paint brush, moisten the un-notched edge of the gummed strip with water, and apply the strip with the plain edge on the guide line. Start at the lowest edge of the roof, and work up to the ridge. Or you can apply a thin bead of white glue on the guide line and position the plain portion atop the glue and seat with your fingernail.
Note: By moistening or gluing only the un-notched edge, individual shingles can later be bent up slightly here and there to give increased texture as in older roofs when some of have warped.
D. As each strip of shingles is glued on, slide it slightly from side to side so that the notches between the shingles do not line up with those in the previous row. Also, allow a bit of overhang at each end, which can be trimmed off later when all of the shingles are in place.
E. When you come to the top row of shingles, at the peak of the roof, moisten the shingles themselves, and glue them on so the notches come right to the top edge. After they are dry, trim off the un-notched edge. When all the shingles are on the card, allow it to dry under pressure to prevent warping. Finish the peak of the roof by gluing a small square strip of wood in the groove where the cards meet.
F. When finished, your roof may be painted any color you wish, or left unpainted, the natural color of the shingles is the same as that of newly-laid shingles. Weathering may be applied directly to the shingles, or after they have been painted. If you paint your roof with air brush or spray, there is no problem, but if you use a regular brush stroke the color on lightly, so as not to flatten the texture of the shingles.
